Plants make their own food through photosynthesis, and some have vessels for transport while others don't. In this lesson you learn the parts of a plant and their functions, and the difference between vascular and nonvascular plants.
💡 Tip: To tell xylem from phloem: xylem carries water and minerals up from the roots, and phloem carries the food made in the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Ghada explains the lesson and answers your questions about it. Log in to get started.
The plant produces sugar as its food and releases oxygen gas into the air, using water, carbon dioxide, and the energy of sunlight absorbed by chlorophyll.
Vascular plants have transport tubes (xylem and phloem) that let them grow tall, such as the palm tree. Nonvascular plants have no tubes, so they stay small and live in damp places, such as mosses.
